Fields of expertise

The Finnish focus of space activities is on earth observation, navigation and science. An important goal is to enlarge the use of space technology in other business sectors through technology transfer.

Companies and research groups have expertise especially in remote sensing applications related to water quality, sea ice, oil spills, forestry, snow and climate.

Other strong fields of expertise are telecommunication and navigation technologies with applications in cell phones, transport, sports and security.

The space industry's technological strenghts include composite structures and structural design, electronics and software, as well as detectors and radar and radio technology.

Finnish research teams do high level research in, for example, easurement of high energetic particles and high energy astrophysics and the atmospheres of the planets,  physics of Aurora Borealis and space weather.
